Hospital Hosts Annual Basket Raffle to Benefit Back Pack Program
September 17, 2015
Martinsville, VA (September 17, 2015) – On Monday, September 14, Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County (“MHMHC”) kicked off its annual Basket Raffle to benefit the Food For Kids School Backpack program at Community Storehouse. The fundraiser, which is open to hospital employees and the public, raised over $24,000 last year and hopes to make an even larger impact this year.
Food For Kids makes a difference in the lives of local impoverished children by providing discrete backpacks, filled with nutritious, child-friendly foods, for kids to utilize on weekends and holidays when other resources, such as school breakfast and lunch programs, are not available. The program is designed to meet the needs of children who rely on these resources as their only, or only reliable, source of food. Teachers, counselors and school nurses refer children they think would benefit from the program.
According to Christy Stutts, Director of Surgical Services at MHMHC and Chairman of the Community Storehouse Board of Directors, the hospital has hosted the event for over five years. “As healthcare providers, our employees truly understand how essential proper nutrition is towards a child’s physical and mental development. Good nutrition during their childhood years lays the foundation towards their future health, academic achievement and even economic productivity. Our employees have raised thousands of dollars over the years through this fundraiser to help ensure our local children are fed,” said Stutts.
Each department at the hospital prepared a themed basket to be raffled off on Friday, September 25th at 1:45 pm. Basket themes range from cooking accessories, “Everything but the Kitchen Sink,” and Christmas supplies, “Flying In With All of Your Christmas Needs,” to fitness and hunting gear, “Everything but the Gun & Buck”, and lottery tickets “The End of the Rainbow.” All baskets are on display in the hospital cafeteria through next Friday, September 25. Tickets are $5.00 each or 50 tickets with the full sponsorship of one child, which costs $208 per year.
“The annual basket raffle is a huge hit with our employees,” said MaDena DuChemin, Director of Human Resources at MHMHC and Secretary of the Community Storehouse Board of Directors. “Not only does it encourage creativity and healthy competition among our departments, but our employees have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of our local children.”
